Michigan is the nation’s No. 1 team in the latest USCHO.com rankings.
The Wolverines, who lost to Minnesota-Duluth in last year’s national title game, are 4-0 following their 10-3 rout of St. Lawrence Thursday. They will play a CCHA series starting Friday at Northern Michigan.
Former Michigan associate coach Mel Pearson is quickly turning things around at Michigan Tech.
Tech is 4-0 following its weekend sweep of Wisconsin. The win total matched the team’s from a year ago, when it was 4-30-4. Jordan Baker scored the winner in overtime Friday for a 2-1 victory, then assisted on Brett Olson’s goal 20 seconds into overtime Saturday. Wisconsin played in the national title game at Ford Field in 2010.
Pearson played for Tech from 1977-81. He played on Tech’s last Frozen Four team 30 years ago.
Tech senior Josh Robinson is 3-0 with a .950 save percentage and a goals-against average of 1.31. He will try to continue his strong play when Tech plays at Bemidji State this weekend.
While Tech is unranked in the USCHO.com poll, Tech cracked Inside College Hockey’s poll this week at No. 19.
Tom Anastos isn’t getting that same great start as the new head coach at Michigan State. The Spartans were swept (5-4, 3-2) last weekend by a Lake Superior State team that finished 13-17-9 last season.
MSU (1-3) will play host to Ohio State Thursday.
