Gardner gets start for Michigan

Michigan junior Devin Gardner will start at quarterback today against Northwestern.

This will be Gardner’s second straight start, while senior Denard Robinson continues to recover from a nerve injury in his right (throwing) arm. Gardner threw two touchdowns and ran for another as he led Michigan to a victory last Saturday at Minnesota.

In pre-game warmups, Robinson, wearing a long blue protective sleeve on his right arm, was limited.

Jack Kennedy, a walk-on, appeared to be warming up as Gardner’s backup — he was the backup last week — and Russell Bellomy was the third in warm-ups and then freshman Brian Cleary.

In other news, senior safety Jordan Kovacs will switch from No. 32 to No. 11, to honor the Wistert Brothers. The brothers — Francis, Albert and Alvin — all wore No. 11 while at Michigan. The number was retired but has returned to circulation as a “Legends” jersey.
