As an aside to Friday’s story in The Detroit News on how the Michigan athletic department wants to tackle the issue of no-shows in the Michigan Stadium student section, athletic director Dave Brandon said U-M hoops student attendance is on the rise.
“Basketball is in a different mode,” Brandon said. “The student section is growing and the students are very loyal. There are far more basketball games than football, and you’d think it would be more of a problem. I’m not as concerned about basketball.
“The only time I’m concerned, we have important games on the schedule when students go on break and are not in school. That’s unfortunate. You really feel it when they’re not there.”
At last Saturday’s home football game against Northwestern, 11,000 students were not in the stadium at kickoff. There are 22,000 seats in the student section.
