Michigan trails, 14-3 at the end of the first quarter

Michigan’s only score has come on a 39-yard field goal from Brendan Gibbons, but South Carolina has struck twice and quickly.

The Gamecocks scored on the opening drive with a 56-yard strike from Connor Shaw to Damiere Byrd. Michigan’s first series of the game ended with Devin Gardner’s interception.

Gibbons made it 7-3 with his field goal, but South Carolina receiver/returner Ace Sanders returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown to give the Gamecocks a 14-3 lead. That was his second punt return for a score this season.

Michigan had 82 yards in the first quarter to South Carolina’s 79. All of the Gamecocks’ yards have come through the air.

Gardner was 7-of-12 for 86 yards, while Denard Robinson had five carries for 26 yards.
