Bicycle owners all over town should keep up their excitement as Detroit continues to turn itself into a real cycler’s city. With the emergence of Shinola, popular rides like Slow Roll and Tour De Toit growing in numbers, and neighborhoods promoting bike lanes and repair stations, some new business owners have decided to get in the mix. Three new bike shops recently opened up and are hoping to build on this cycling enthusiasm.
Inspired by the old bike shops that used to occupy storefronts across the city, Detroit Bikes is right downtown in the Griswold Building. Check it out next time you’re walking by, they’ve got classic antique cases, fun red wallpaper, and some nice looking bikes! Detroit Bikes started back in 2011 with a factory over on the west side, and this new store now gives them a retail location downtown where they feature their 2 current models – the A-Type and the B-Type.
Over in Corktown you can check out Metropolis Bikes. Right across from Slow’s on Michigan Avenue with an Astro meets Willys feel, they’ve got bikes, accessories, repairs, everything you need, and they’re open from 11a-7p seven days a week.
Number three is over in Eastern Market. Motorless City Bicycle Co. does it all as well. They’ve got a great selection of models and brands, and they also offer custom bicycles out of their onsite fabrication center where they say they’ll assemble the bike of your dreams!
So, if you’re a cycler and you need a new ride or just a tune-up, go check out one of these new shops. They’re all open for business and excited to get some more Detroiters out on the roads. Ride safe.
