The stylish and slick presentation of Vanquish is hung around a lackluster plot, but you may not notice that because you’ll be too busy being impressed by the presentation.
This cover-based shooter allows you to take control of a super-suited soldier as you battle to regain control of a space station that has been hijacked by Russian terrorists. The combat is fast and furious, and the ability to use the suit’s boosters to dash from cover to cover as you battle the enemy is a welcome one. You can also exchange weapons you have with ones you taken from defeated enemies, as well as upgrade weapons and armor systems.
The story here is the weakest part of the game, which is a shame. Well, that and the utterly corny voice-acting. Several times I found myself rolling my eyes or saying “Oh, come on!” to some particularly bad line delivered badly. Luckily, the gameplay is fun and the graphics are impressive (for the most part, I noticed a few glitches, but the scale of some of the setpieces and bosses more than made up for those).
