Got a great email this morning from Warner Bros. with the voice cast for the next animated Justice League movie, “Justice League: Doom.”
It’ll be out in early 2012 and reunites a bunch of voice alumni from Cartoon Network’s beloved series: Tim Daly as Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum as Flash, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman and Carl Lumbly as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. Nathan Fillion will reprise is “Emerald Knights” role as Hal Jordan, and Bumper Robinson joins the cast as Cyborg.
On the villain side, we also see some “JL” alums: Phil Morris as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo as Star Sapphire and Alexis Denisof as Mirror Master. Carlos Alazraqui as Bane, Paul Blackthorne as Metallo and Claudia Black (love her!) as Cheetah round out the main baddies. The Royal Flush gang will also appear, but their voice cast wasn’t released. I’m guessing it won’t be more than a fight scene.
The story is based on Mark Waid’s “JLA: Tower of Babel” arc. In this interpretation, a team of villains (a legion of doom, if you will) finds Batman’s set of plans for stopping heroes who turn rogue. Oops. According to Warner, it’s the final script from the late Dwayne McDuffie, the prolific comic and screenplay writer who died last year and was from Detroit.
I’m glad to see such a great voice cast assembled for what should be a good story. Fillion, especially, deserves the chance to actually say something, instead of being wasted as he was in “Emerald Knights.”
I’m sorry to see Aquaman won’t be part of this team. I guess it makes sense to add diversity with Cyborg, who’s also a member of the founding team in the mother book now. But so’s Aquaman, darn it!
I’ve got to say, the animation looks pretty cheap, even more than usual for these films, but hopefully the story will carry it.
