A bit of San Diego Comic-Con will be coming to Detroit in April courtesy of documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (“Supersize Me”).
Spurlock is taking “Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope” on tour, with a stop scheduled for the Fillmore Detroit on April 22.
Filmed in 2010, Spurlock takes his quirky sensibility to the nation’s biggest “nerd prom” and introduces us to some real people: an obsessive action figure collector, two aspiring artists, a costume designer and a young fan with a mission. We also get interviews with celebrities with geek cred, such as Frank Miller, Seth Rogen and Kevin Smith.
It looks like there’s some lighthearted tweaking of the experience, but having been there, I can say there’s a lot that’s worth taking some jabs at. I just hope that overall, it’s respectful and doesn’t concentrate on just the fringe elements, as fun as they are, or make relentless fun of congoers.
I don’t think producers that include Stan Lee and Joss Whedon would present a movie like that, though, so I’m guessing we’re in safe hands.
In addition to showing the film, tour stops will include exhibitor booths, costumes and panels, just like the real con.
Other screenings in the region include April 20 in Chicago and April 19 in Cincinnati. More dates will be announced later.
Here’s the trailer:
See you there? I’ll update when I get ticket information.
