It’s the beginning of November so that can only mean one thing: the return of Youmacon.
The state’s biggest anime convention is back in Detroit this weekend, and it continues to grow.
The main base of operations will be the Renaissance Center again, but dozens of events will also be taking place at Cobo Center, along with the dealers room.
The fun begins tonight with a few panels and videos and then goes 24 hours a day through Sunday with video rooms and gaming.
The star guest this year is Shinichi “Nabeshin” Watanabe, director of anime series such as “Excel Saga,” “Nerima Daikon Brothers” and “Puni Puni Poemy.”
Other guests include Todd Haberkorn (“Sgt. Frog”), Scott McNeil (“Gundam Wing”), Caitlin Glass (“Fullmetal Alchemist”) and Michael Sinterniklaas, whom I recently praised for his behind-the-microphone work on the dub of “A Cat in Paris.”
Concerts are scheduled with Harry and the Potters, Steam Powered Giraffe and Random Gibberish, among others. The Potter Puppet Pals will also be back.
All that plus the Maid Cafe, cosplay contest, Anime Family Feud, cosplay speed dating, charity ball and much, much more.
Single-day passes range from $20 to $40, and a weekend pass is $60.
