Perfect game, good sports

You may have heard about the perfect game Detroit Western senior Todd Phelps threw in the Detroit Public School League championship game on May 19 at Comerica Park. Detroit Renaissance, Western’s opponent that evening, isn’t the strongest hitting team in the area, but to throw a perfect game is still quite an accomplishment, especially under the circumstances.

What impressed me was how Phelps, the coaching staff at Western and the community that came out in support of the team responded afterward. There was no showmanship, no bravado. Everyone congratulated Phelps, but there was nothing over the top. It was a well-pitched game and that was that.

The PSL is not known for its strong baseball programs but Western is the exception. Coach Mike Vasquez and his staff do a fine job of coaching the players and they play the game the right way. For what it’s worth, they’re pretty good, too.
