Gold medal for track finals

Last Saturday was anything but an ideal day to run a track meet, but the staff at Rockford High School — from the volunteers to the administrative staff — did a fantastic job. The heat and humidity, which we haven’t had a lot in 2011, was stifling. Some athletes had difficulty coping, as did many of the members of the media, even though they worked under a tent. A seemingly unlimited supply of water was available to everyone who was working that day and it was needed.

Track and field is unique in that so many events take place at the same time and it can be difficult to manage. The Grand Rapids area has been a great host for the track finals, and the MHSAA would be smart to keep the events there. Much like Battle Creek for baseball/softball, Detroit for football and East Lansing for basketball, it’s where that sport should be for the state championships.
