The round of 16 of the Detroit Public School League playoffs are Tuesday with the quarterfinals to follow on Friday.
For high school basketball fans there is no better time of year. The PSL playoffs provide a taste of what will take place in March – single-game elimination with the winner advancing with a basket full of confidence.
The Catholic League playoffs begin Feb. 18 for the big schools and the Kensington Lakes also have their playoffs scheduled to start Feb. 21.
No disrespect to these two leagues but the PSL playoffs are special. For many of the players in the Detroit, good or bad, the PSL playoffs are more important than the state tournament. The PSL playoffs also afford us a glimpse of the state tournament. It’s possible Detroit Pershing will face Detroit Mumford in a league quarterfinal on Friday and again meet in the Class A districts.
And just like in the state tournament upsets and the emergence of a Cinderella team is always a possibility.
