Rochester Hills native Peter Vanderkaay and his family — parents Mark and Robin, and brothers Christian, Alex and Dane – are headed back for a third Olympic Games beginning next week in London. And there’s still time to join them, at least in spirit. The family’s quadrennial t-shirt campaign continues with this year’s commemorative “Vanderkaay USA” design. All profits from the t-shirt sales will be donated to the Detroit Boll YMCA “Detroit Swims” Initiative.
“The shirts have gone viral,” said Robin Vanderkaay, whose four sons all swam collegiately at Michigan and made history by all qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha. “We’re so excited about it. It’s a great project.”
Vanderkaay, 28, qualified for his third Olympics last month by winning the men’s 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. trials in Omaha. He won relay gold in 2004 in Athens, and again in 2008 in Beijing, where he also won an individual bronze in the 200 free.
