On New England’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Tom Brady stepped back into the end zone and launched a pass deep down the middle of the field.
Unfortunately for him, nobody was there.
After a brief consolation, a flag was thrown and Brady was called for intentional grounding. By rule, because the foul occurred in the end zone, it was ruled a safety, giving New York the first points of the game and a 2-0 lead.
It was reminiscent of this year’s Outback Bowl where Michigan State also conceded a safety on its first play from scrimmage.
Up 2-0, the Giants will get the ball back on a free kick.
