Mayhew, Schwartz on the Broyles pick

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew on the team’s pick of Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles, a player who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last November:

“Best player on our board. Very productive guy, will be a great fit for us. We have the luxury of being able to rehab this guy. If this guy were (100 percent) healthy now, he would’ve been gone (earlier in the draft.”

Lions coach Jim Schwartz on the Broyles pick:

“The philosophy is talent rules the board.”

Schwartz on Broyles injured left knee:

“We have a plan for him.”

Schwartz on the team’s “best player available” philosphy:

“Good players play. You don’t solve needs by drafting poor players.”

A few noteworthy things from Schwartz on Broyles when asked by the media about the player here in Allen Park: Schwartz believes Broyles won’t be sidelined because of his health for an entire season and will be able to complete for slot receiver and punt return roles once he’s healthy. … Schwartz also said Broyles  has an ability to play outside because of his strength. … Mayhew and Schwartz didn’t drop any hints about what they could possibly do with the team remaining picks.
