About Benson and Grant

General manager Martin Mayhew made his intentions clear on the running back situation during his training camp press conference a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, there were a couple of veteran free agent running backs that have already been evaluated who he could and would call if he thought there was a need.

Presently, even though neither Jahvid Best nor Mikel Leshoure have participated in camp, he doesn’t feel the need to do so. He said he had confidence in Kevin Smith. He said he wanted to give a long look to Stefan Logan, Keiland Williams, Joique Bell and Stephfon Green.

Presumably, that long look will extend past two exhibition games.

When we talked to Mayhew, he was confident that both Best and Leshoure would be big contributors this season. Leshoure’s season starts in Week 3 (after his suspension) and Best, well, Best’s status is still a mystery.

Bottom line, though, is Mayhew feels no urgency to bring in another back at this time. Check back in a week.

But I can tell you this, the Lions had no interest in Cedric Benson. None. Too much baggage there.

I believe the guy at the top of their list would be Ryan Grant. I know for sure he’s on the list, if not at the top of it.
