Detroit at its most glorious

I’m watching the live stream of the financial review panel at Detroit City Hall. If the ignorance on display wasn’t so tragic, it would be downright hilarious.
After nearly an hour of chanting, singing and shouting that drowned out the proceedings of the review panel, the meeting now has moved to the public comment period.
Speaker after speaker is coming to the microphone. The woman I’m currently watching called out panel member and former Supreme Court Justice Conrad Mallett a “coward running scared.” Another claimed the panel was “raping Detroit,” and yet another said the banks are at fault here because so much of Detroit’s tax revenue goes to pay off the debt from all of the money Detroit has borrowed over the years. Another compared the panel to the shooter of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, holding up a can of tea and a bag of Skittles.
So far, no one has offered anything resembling a rational alternative to Detroit running out of money and turning out the lights in 30 days or so — and that will happen without state intervention.
State Treasure Andy Dillon is chewing gum and sitting calmly through the chaos. But his thought bubble says he’s questioning his career choice. This is great TV. Why hasn’t Hollywood seen the opporutnity here? Instead of reality shows about dog catchers and meter maids, you could get a blockbuster out of Detroit’s public meetings.
And the governor wants to subject himself to more of this public expression next week? I can’t wait!
