it’s early in the presdential campaign, but already President Barack Obama has worked his way through the war on women, student loans and now gay marriage.
Anything to keep the conversation away from debt, deficits and the faltering economy.
Obama’s carefully contrived “evolution” on gay mariage this week was as trasparent as glass.
First, Vice President Joe Biden casually let it slip on the Sunday morning talk shows that he now supports gay marriage, triggering intense speculation about whether it was another Biden blunder or a stalking horse for a presidential announcement.
The answer came the next day, when Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he, too, backs gay marriage.
No surprise then when the president said today that his own position has evolved to the point where he also supports the rights of gays to legally marry.
Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney again took the bait, allowing himself to be drawn into this discussion.
So again the campaigns are debating divisive social issues instead of fiscal policy.
That plays to Obama’s strategy of painting Romney as an extremist and avoiding having to answer for the economy.
Next up — abortion. Or maybe religion.
Anything but the $1.3 trillion deficit.
