You can almost hear the conversation in the White House war room this week as President Barack Obama’s position on gay marriage was “evolving.”
“First, let’s have Joe blurt out on Meet the Presss that he thinks gay marriage is OK. Everyone will wonder whether he’s sticking his foot in his mouth again, or whether something bigger is coming. That’ll warm up some interest..
“Then on Monday, Arne says that he also supports gay marriage. That shoud start the speculation about whether the president’s position is evolving. Make sure all the reporters know to use that word. It’s evolution, not flip-flop.
“The president can drop his package on Wednesday. He can say he really wasn’t ready, and recognizes the political risks, but Joe and Arne forced his hand. Who should we give this to — Rachel, Anderson, Ellen? How ’bout Robin Roberts? You can count on her to gush about the thrill of witnessing such an historic moment.
“Somebody remember to call the Washington Post and tell them the can go ahead Thursday with the story on Mitt Romney bullying a gay kid in high school.
“That should wrap things up nicely.”
