We want good roads, without paying tab

If what i experienced in Macomb County this week is any indication, Gov. Rick Snyder has a tough road ahead in selling his plan to invest $1.2 billion more a year in the state’s transportation infrastructure.
I moderated a discussion for the Macomb Chamber of Conference featuring local elected officials. When the subject turned to the governor’s transporation proposal, I asked how many in the audience of roughly 75 thought the state needed to spend more to fix its roads and bridges. Nearly every hand shot up.
Then I asked if they would support a hike in the gasoline tax to pay the tab. If a single hand was raised, I missed it.
I followed that up by asking if they’d prefer an increase in the vehicle registration fee of $120 a year, as the governor suggested. Again, no hands.
Finally I asked if anyone favored the alternative of raising the sales tax on everyone to pay for roads. No one did.
Unless the governor can figure out how to make the roads pay for fixing themselves, I’m not sure his plan is going to get much traction.
