Woodward Dream Cruise

Woodward Dream Cruise hot in Royal Oak

Curtis Brown can’t think of any place else he’d rather be on a warm summer night than cruising in his 1963 Chevrolet panel truck.
“I had my heart set on a 1963 or 66 Pontiac, but then I saw this on a trip to Alabama and that was it,” said Brown, of Detroit.
“I was sold. It wasn’t in the best of shape. It took 24 hours to drive it back to Detroit when the trip ordinarily only takes 12.”
Brown restored the truck, which used to belong to the Georgia State Police and painted it a cream and burnt orange.
Brown has driven it in the WDC for the past 10 years, accompanied by his friend Darlene Lay.
“We love the cruise and wouldn’t miss it,” Lay said.
Thursday night traffic on Woodward was light everywhere except in a one mile stretch of Royal Oak between 12 1/2 Mile and 13 1/2 Mile roads. Maybe it was the threat of rain that kept many cruisers and spectators away, but everyone else was having a great time.
