Car club scales back, still has fun

You won’t see an Elvis impersonator, DJ or burgers grilling on the corner of Woodward and Whittemore — at least not this year. The North Oakland Bowtie’s car club has had to scale back their Dream Cruise get-together, said co-founder Bob Martinson, but they still enjoy it.

“The economy has definitely affected the Dream Cruise,” he said. “We all have fun, though.”

Martinson owns 13 classic cars, and is cruising this year in a 1969 Chevy Chevelle SS. It looks innocent enough, but Martinson customized the 700-horsepower ride to race.

“It’s a race car in disguise,” he said. “But it rides as smooth as a Cadillac.”
