Talking Oak

Visitors outside Canton Township Administrative Offices walk past William Maw Egley’s 1857 painting “Talking Oak,” one of 82 masterpieces on display around the Detroit Metro area as part of the Detroit Institute of Art’s “Inside/Out” program which brings elite reproductions of some of the museum’s treasures to 13 cities for a summer tour. “Talking Oak” was inspired by an Alfred Lord Tennyson poem and its heroine Olivia, who confesses her love for a young man to the old oak tree. The tree then falls in love with Olivia in return.
