Despite often having the best seat in the house, it is still a wonderful and rare moment when you get to share in someone’s life. After Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith finished picking up the winning touchdown against the St. Louis Rams, he went into the player’s prayer circle at the center of the field. Due to tight deadlines, many of the media, quickly raced to grab other players, Calvin orStafford, for on field interviews, leaving Smith alone. After the prayer, he started for the stands so I thought he was going to ‘high 5′ some fans so I followed him. As he looked into the stands, he suddenly broke into a huge smile and headed for a section behind the bench. He climbed on top of a case to greet his son, Kevin Jr. and his mother Pam and gave each a big kiss. Despite being pretty tall, I still couldn’t get high enough so I hooked my arm onto the rail and put the camera up as high as I could and started shooting; a Hail Mary. The good think about not looking through the camera, you can really see what is going on and in that moment, I saw a dad, who later revealed had not been able to see his son since training camp, with his little man and that was pretty cool. Oh, and I got the pic!
