Those that know me, know my favorite shots are usually the ones I don’t actually see, which in my case means, when using a short lens, I take it away from my face and just move the camera around with out looking through the eye piece. One …
reason I do this is because of my height, I would always be slumped over or crouching which is not a comfortable way to shoot. Another reason, I like to see what is happening around me and the subject I am photographing, so I can see what is coming up next and can be positioning myself in the best spot to get that shot. Finally, the third reason I don’t like looking through the camera is I like to be surprised at what I get. I started out in this business, assisting studio photographers where every aspect of a picture is created, manipulated and refined which I found to be entirely to concrete and in my case, just not fun. So if you see me eating a hot dog while covering a Tigers game, I’m actually hard at work. I shot this pic, without looking through the camera Friday night at the Detroit PSL Championship game.
