The truth about deficits

It’s been said before, many times, in many ways but this quote of the week really can’t be repeated enough:

All the fiscal posturing of the last couple of years has been about using the deficit as a club to smash the welfare state, with the secondary goal of frustrating any efforts on the part of the Obama administration to help the struggling economy.

The entire debate has been fake. ~Paul Krugman

The Republicans will continue to use the deficit as an excuse for their reckless hostage taking and sabotaging of our economic recovery, but every single thing they propose only increases it. Besides the political advantage they hope to gain, their clear intent is to use the deficit as an excuse to shred the social safety net.

They don’t want to eliminate the deficit. They need it not only to justify their obstructionism, but as a campaign issue. With this session of Congress set to go down as the least productive in the history of our nation, they have no real accomplishments to run on. Their entire strategy is pinned to grinding the normal process of government to a near halt and then blaming the Democrats because the system is broken.
