It was true. Santorum did win Iowa (xls file from IowaGOP).
But in the days after Iowa, no one even tried to offer Rick a bone. Heck, the biggest narrative was that “Romney wins two in a row”. Some folks actually tried to tell people this was rigged, but since no one actually vets their candidates or questions the actions of the GOP and their media weasels, why should we be surprised? Santorum did win Iowa, but it wouldn’t matter anyways.
So as the rest of the GOP nation settles with Romney (and a final gasp from Newt Gingrich after Rick Perry finally sees the light), we find ourselves at a final South Carolina debate, the few days before you finally pick the guy who pays 15% taxes, won’t release his previous tax returns, and backed/opposed just about everything under the conservative sun.
But don’t let me say it. Let John Hawkins at Townhall.com tell it. It’s not a secret that the GOP faces a real test of their own. But is anyone listening? Or finally, is the establishment GOP finally taking over from their base, and steering this race the same way they steered Senator McCain into the ditch?
I’m not saying Rick Santorum is electable. But he won Iowa. Everything that followed his “loss” was a designed media reveal of the preferred candidate. With only 3 states so far, the GOP voters in all states should ask why their decision should be made for them. And in Michigan, it’s almost a physics law that Romney shall win here.
So while Romney may win enough of the delegate votes (as President Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton made news in June 2008), they should actually go through at least a quorum before they use the media to make up a winner.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the media simply ignores the fact that Santorum won Iowa, because they never wanted Santorum to win Iowa. All the written lines won’t be changed, just modified to fit the narrative.
And for internal vetting for the GOP, who released those numbers that gave Romney the win? Who leaked it to the press, and why was it so important for Romney to “win” Iowa? Karl Rove seemed ready to comment immediately.
But all this is really moot. Rick Perry has dropped out. Newt Gingrich is surging in SC because there is no other place to go. And with the news that Santorum won Iowa (something he’ll definitely say tonight at the CNN debate!), it will be a real test for state GOP parties to reconsider just handing Romney their blessing. Santorum might pick up the Perry gap, but Newt likely will receive the lion’s share.
Maybe it’s just fate, though. Since no one cared then, why should anyone care now? Newt might be the GOP’s only hope. Then again, Newt wanted an open marriage. Talk about Bain…
Egad.
Mako out.
