The nation is looking for the Obama that spoke so well at the Democratic Convention in 2004 that it made his name a household word and propelled him to the front of the line as the next Democratic nominee for the presidency. President Barack Obama will speak again to the nation tonight in his last State of the Union for this term.
The president will need to make some things plain and very plain. What did he mean by “yes we can?” What did he mean by “it’s time for change?” It must be made clear. If he is expecting people to vote for him this time around that voted for him last time, these two sayings must be addressed to the satisfaction of his supporters.
There will be no “let’s make history vote” this time around. Many Americans, black and white, voted to make history. If President Obama doesn’t make a clear case and super explanation demonstrating how he lived up to “yes we can” and “time for a change,” he will not have the support of the young first-voters that put him in office in 2008.
We can’t wait.
