In Michigan, there as been a long fight over building a second bridge out of Detroit into Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The fight is about who can build the bridge, where the bridge will be, who will own the bridge and if the bridge is needed.
The fight to stop the bridge has gone past the state legislation and to the people. Millions of dollars have been spent to stop the governor from building the bridge without a vote by the citizens of Michigan.
We must put all the fights aside and build the bridge. It is like the Detroit downtown People Mover; when the late, great Mayor Colman A. Young pressed to build the People Mover 90 percent of the buildings downtown were closed and there was no Greektown Casino, people fought it. They said things like who will move in and where will they go? But the mayor would say it may not move any people but it will create jobs.
We all love the People Mover now. It has helped develop downtown and the football and baseball fans love it just like Cobo and casino fans, but when it was built it was just for the much-needed jobs. That is why the governor needs to go forward with the bridge in Detroit.
