Adding to my previous post, another false excuse Mr. Romney is using to avoid releasing his tax returns is that John Kerry had only released two years of returns in 2004. This is not true. As in “pants on fire” false. John Kerry released his tax returns every time he ran for Massachusetts Senator. By the time he ran for President, he had already released 20 years worth of returns. As former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney should know this for a fact.
Mr. Romney even hid behind John Kerry’s wife as a dodge, saying since she didn’t release her tax returns he shouldn’t have to either. I leave it to you to figure out the logic in that excuse. If we’re to include wives in the precedent, perhaps Mitt would like to release Ann Romney’s returns too. I imagine with the Romney’s complicated foreign holdings, she must have to file some investment income separately.
But to be fair, Romney was telling the truth when he said John McCain only released two years worth of tax returns. Of course, John McCain was also anxious to hide his wealth. You’ll recall he couldn’t even remember how many houses he and Cindy owned.
One extremely wealthy man’s failure to disclose his finances is not an honest or acceptable precedent to be set in any healthy democracy. Mitt Romney should man up and rise to the higher standard set by his own father.
