Media, do your job and do right by the Detroit electorate!

Unlike four years ago when the media appeared to show themselves to be either blind, deaf or a combination of both, it would be a major travesty to ignore the recordings that were played Thursday in the federal corruption trial of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The fact that the name Mike Duggan surfaced in the trial should be enough for the media to do their due diligence and not sit on their hands without trying to find out just what Bernard Kilpatrick meant when he uttered the names heard on the recording.

In my humble opinion, the media looked the other way when it came to the candidates seeking to become mayor after the train wreck that was one Kwame M. Kilpatrick. Four plus years later, Dave Bing has shown himself to be a major failure and a person not ready for the responsibility that comes with being the mayor of a major U.S. city.

The citizens cannot allow themselves to be bamboozled by any candidate that is deemed to be the chosen one by the media and others. No matter who the media shows to be their darling or whom the business or religious community get behind, it may behoove the electorate to go in the opposite direction.

Thursday’s testimony in a trial whose purpose is to root out corruption could not be a good sign for anyone hoping to become the next mayor of Detroit, especially if your name is dropped with regard to possibly being. … well, “corrupt.”

Citizens of Detroit, there is a saying that goes, “Fool me once and shame on you, but fool me twice and shame on me.” Do not allow yourselves to be fooled again. It is up to every one of you to become educated, informed, aware and intelligent voters.

The destiny of Detroit lies with the people that the citizens choose to represent them. It is time for the Detroit electorate to decide for themselves whom they want to lead and not let others decide their leaders for them.

Take ownership of what you want your destiny to be and hold those whom you elect accountable; likewise, hold the media accountable for the candidates that they may try to ram down your throats.
