Best Lincoln Day speaker Oakland GOP can get is . . . Donald Trump?

Seriously? The king of the birther movement?

Oakland County Republicans can do what they want, and I suppose he might help to sell tickets. But given the rather weak influence the Republican Party seems to have in the governance of the nation these days, you might think they would pick someone who has – oh, I don’t know – some appealing ideas?

There are governors doing innovative things. There are actually a few members of Congress who show leadership potential. Their own county executive has a lot of useful things to say about responsible budgeting, which would seem to be a message the GOP could do well by bringing to the nation in an effective way.

Or you could put a guy up there who is still obsessed with the notion that President Obama was born in Kenya, and who is best known for hair that parts in ways that defy the laws of physics. As you wish. Last I checked, the Republican Party did not exactly have the dominant hold on OaklandCounty that it used to have, and its primary strategy for countering this trend was to engage in creative gerrymandering to help it maintain control of the county commission.

I’m sure OaklandCounty residents who have been slipping away from the GOP will come back in droves when they see the embrace of Donald Trump.
