In between interviewing Gerard Butler (“Machine Gun Preacher”), Keira Knightley (“A Dangerous Method”) and Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”) — all of whom were gracious and delightful, by the way — I only got to one movie today. But boy, was it a doozy.
In terms of just plain enjoyment, Whit Stillman’s “Damsels in Distress” is a huge success. It’s a whimsical, witty, exuberant look at college life — or something resembling college life — suicide, insanity, identity and the meaning of dance crazes. And it is the perfect vehicle for the so-charming-it-hurts Greta Gerwig, who absolutely dazzles. I’ll save the rest for a formal review, but the laughter never stops.
The good news for me here is I’m doing tons of interviews and getting good stuff. The bad news for me here is I’m doing tons of interviews and not seeing many movies. But I got lucky with “Damsels in Distress.” Really, can’t wait to see it again.
