Well, so much for a bang-up weekend at the box office.
Don’t misunderstand, money was made, and the final tally is still 14 percent higher than the comparable weekend last year. But two new (well, sort of new) entries found themselves trounced by “The Hunger Games,” which won the box office for the third weekend in a row.
“Games” took in a reported $33.5 million, which pushed it past the $300 million mark on Easter Sunday. And remember, that’s just the domestic gross. Worldwide it has taken in $459 million in 17 days. Yikes.
Some folks had been predicting “American Reunion,” the latest “American Pie” sequel, and the 3-D rerelease of “Titanic” might also push for the $30 million mark, but not even close. “Reunion” took in $21.5 million while “Titanic” made $17.3 million. Not disasters, but not great numbers, either.
Meanwhile, “Wrath of the Titans,” which is being written off as a bomb domestically since it’s only made about $59 million, has earned more than $210 million worldwide in only 10 days. Don’t count Sam Worthington out just yet.
