Levon Helm, singing drummer extraordinaire of The Band, is entering the final stages of his struggle with cancer, according to a posting on his website levonhelm.com by his wife and daughter.
Helm, a founding member of The Band, was diagnosed with throat cancer in the ’90s, but fought his way back and was able to sing again.
“Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey,” his wife Sandy and daughter Amy wrote. “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration… he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…”
Helm, who lives in Woodstock, N.Y., has been holding musical “Rambles” in his barn featuring a stellar cast of his musician friends, for some time. He took his “Ramble” on the road, and appeared in Ann Arbor in March.
