If you have six hours to commit, do make sure you tune in to the History miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” when it begins airing at 9 tonight through Wednesday.
In case you haven’t been paying attention to all the buzz, the made-for-TV flick stars first time TVer Kevin Costner as the head Hatfield and Bill Paxton as the head McCoy.
Both have insanely wild beards, grizzled expressions and dirty faces. But behind the scenes, Costner has a lot more power and input. Not only is he an executive producer but he also performs the entire soundtrack with his band Modern West. Oh yeah, and he hand picked the director, Kevin Reynolds, his old director and pal from movies such as “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” and that flop “Waterworld.”
Well, rest assured. “Hatfields & McCoys” is a heck of a lot better than “Waterworld” especially if you like westerns. While the piece is heavier on drama than it is on actual history, it’s entertaining and packed with violence, testosterone and anger. Enjoy.
Oh, and if you want the soundtrack CD, drop me an email at mmadden@detnews.com. But act quickly. I only have one.
