Jimmy Fallon, Roots rescue Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe'

Confession: I don’t like Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”

The impossibly bubbly song has lit up radio for months and has reached the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, and people are cheering for it to reach No. 1 on all corners of the internet.

But something has always irked me about the song. It’s always felt a little too cutesy, a little too chirpy, a fact which was magnified by the revelation that Jepsen — the Canadian pop singer under Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun’s tutelage — is 26. How’s this girl acting this sprung over the possibility of a boy calling her at 26? That would be barely acceptable at 16, which is the age she was seemingly positioned as when she performed at the recent Billboard Music Awards.

OK, maybe I’m a fuddy duddy. But a lot of my problems with Jepsen and the song melted away with this utterly charming web-only performance, taped Thursday in a dressing room at “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” I’ve expressed my admiration of Fallon and his show in this space before, and this clip is everything that is right with the show. And it has me on board with Team Jepsen — for now, at least.
