Aretha Franklin, in Los Angeles for a Nokia Theatre concert this past week, told Showbiz Tonight’s Nischelle Turner that she still “wouldn’t mind” being a judge on “American Idol” or a similar show.
“I think that some of the leading singers should judge singers,” Franklin explained. “I see these different shows, but I dn’t see any of the major names as a singer, judging a singer. That’s what I was saying.”
She didn’t think she’d be a tough, Simon Cowell-type judge. “I think construction criticism, if any,” she said. ”Hopefully you wouldn’t have to say anything. But constructive.”
As for the announcement that Mariah Carey would be an “Idol” judge for the coming season: “That’s all right. I like Mariah…So I’m happy for her.”
After the segment, Turner opined: “I think she would be fantastic…she does tell it like it is. Are you kidding? As a viewer, Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey, giving criticism to the next generation of singers? She’d be great.”
