Glitter trash trailer park princess is apparently the role Christina Aguilera was born to play, because she sauces up the screen in a big way in the video for her scorching hot new single “Your Body.” Check it out:
In the clip, directed by Melina Matsoukas — who helmed Rihanna’s Video of the Year-winning “We Found Love” — Aguilera plays a trashy hellbent siren who’s like Alabama Worley’s little sister gone bad. She embarks on a wild road trip where she ignites a car into pink flames, has a bar-restroom romp with a pool-playing stud that ends in splatters of blue paint and picks up a convenience store clerk for a motel room dalliance that ends with her bashing his head into a shower of pink glitter. Rarely has a violent road trip fantasy been this sexy.
Aguilera has never skimped on skin in her videos, but here she seems newly comfortable with her body in ways she hasn’t been before. And she looks to be having fun again, something that was sorely lacking from her last effort, the dismal “Bionic” (and it’s embarrassing lead video, “Not Myself Tonight,” which aimed to shock but bored instead).
Also, in its gutter-glam look, “Your Body” has parallels to 2 Chainz’ and Kanye West’s striking “Birthday Song” clip. Whether it’s a reaction to the recession or a blowback against the flashy excess that has long dominated music videos, grime is the new shine, and it looks good.
