With each game that he’s missing because of that nagging ankle bruise, there’s a chance Nicklas Lidstrom’s chance for history is slipping away.
Lidstrom’s bid for an eighth Norris Trophy was going strong for most of the season until that darn puck got him in just the wrong place on his foot.
That happened Feb. 25. Almont a month later, Lidstrom still hasn’t returned to the lineup.
White Lidstrom sits and waits, defensemen such as Boston’s Zdeno Chara, Nashville’s Shea Weber, and even Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson are making cases with the voters (the hockey writers association).
Now, if Lidstrom returns in the next game or two, and makes one more impression upon voters these last couple weeks, I wouldn’t doubt he’d be a serious contender. He’s had another marvelous season.
But Weber has been dominant at times this season in Nashville, and Chara seems to have the support of the Eastern Conference bloc of writers.
Being out of sight and out of mind may ultimately hurt Lidstrom.
