General manager Ken Holland has said in recent days he has cut off any more contract talks until the end of the playoffs.
That will make for some intriguing developments once the Wings’ season ultimately ends, whenever that will be.
The futures of Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Brad Stuart, and Jiri Hudler, in particular, will be watched closely.
All are potential unrestricted free agents. And each has murky futures with the Wings for different reasons.
Lidstrom and Holmstrom aren’t far from retirement. Holmstrom could well be headed toward that route after several years of dealing with injuries.
Lidstrom hasn’t tipped his hand one way or another about his future. The Wings badly want him to play another year.
But who knows what exactly Lidstrom is thinking?
Stuart seems intent on going somewhere closer to his California home to be with his family – which will leave a huge hole on defense the Wings will need to fill.
And, there’s Hudler. Coming off a career-best season, how much will the Wings be willing to invest in a player who could be fulfilling his potential?
It’s just one of many free agent questions the Wings will need to answer this summer.
