Gustav Nyquist and Brendan Smith get a lot of the publicity among the Red Wings’ minor leaguers but keep an eye on Tomas Tatar with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Tatar is actually leading the Griffins with 11 goals and 21 assists (he also has 10 assists). Nyquist is next with 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists).
Always well thought of by the Red Wings’ front office for his offensive ability, Tatar has scored 24 goals the last two seasons in Grand Rapids.
This is Tatar’s fourth season with the Griffins but he only turned 22 two weeks ago, so he’s had plenty of pro experience at a young age.
His play on the defensive end has improved over the years, and he plays with a bit of an edge.
Tatar already has scored in the NHL, scoring a goal on his first shot Dec. 31, 2010 against the New York Islanders.
Nyquist will likely get a spot on the roster when, or if, this NHL gets underway with Tatar not far behind at all.
