A pre-game octopus toss at the end of the national anthem is tradition at Joe Louis Arena during the playoffs. Everyone in the building knows it’s coming. Well, almost everyone. I bet it only takes one slap on the back of the head with a slimy tentacle to remember it for all future games.
It was an optional skate on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena. So optional that a grand total of four Red Wings (and two children) hit the ice. Here, Todd Bertuzzi battles for the puck with his son Tag.
I haven’t seen a replay of this moment from the second period last night but after Justin Abdelkader sent Phoenix’ Zbynek Michalek into Detroit’s bench it looks like Mike Babcock is fortunate to have his head still on his shoulders this morning.

Ping Pong
I have to give it to Nashville, they know how to take a joke and run with it. They set up a ping pong table outside the stadium for fans to play on before game five. Well played, Predators.
Darren Helm’s locker is the one on the right. It sits sadly empty compared to the sweaty chaos of the lockers belonging to Abdelkader, Miller, and Connor. Helm’s injury in game one will keep him from playing with the team again until training camp.
