Real World alumnus Kevin Powell pummeled by bills

The Real World’s rough, just ask Kwame Kilpatrick, or a Kwame Kilpatrick supporter like pioneering “Real World” cast member Kevin Powell, better known as the angry guy from the reality show’s first season. Public records show the state of New York and IRS have filed tax liens against him totaling $326,775 since last year.

The 45-year-old Brooklyn native has run unsuccessfully for Congress and has published or edited 10 books.

On Monday, he Tweeted his support to Kilpatrick:

What’s owed:

  • The state of New York filed an $82,053 tax warrant against Powell on April 11 with the Kings County Clerk.
  • The IRS filed a $186,063 lien March 8 with the New York City Register’s Office.
  • The state of New York filed a $9,476 tax warrant May 22, 2010, in Kings County.
  • The state of New York filed a $49,183 tax warrant March 27, 2010, in Kings County.

His side:

Powell’s lawyer Antonio Johnson issued the following statement Tuesday:

“Kevin Powell has filed all his tax returns through 2010. He has been working all year on payment arrangements to city, state, and federal agencies. In fact, Mr. Powell made payments to the state tax authorities quite a few times this year. Mr. Powell will continue to work on this matter until it is resolved because he is clear of his tax-paying responsibilities as an American citizen.”
