'Waterboy' star balks at bill, says IRS all wet

Actress Fairuza Balk, who starred as Adam Sandler’s love interest in “The Waterboy,” fought the IRS and won, employing those supernatural powers she displayed in “The Craft” to shrink a $38,690 federal tax lien to about $1,200.

Balk, 37, is a goth goddess who was featured in “Almost Famous,” “American History X,” and alongside epic tax delinquent Nicolas Cage in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.”

What’s owed:

  • The IRS filed a $38,690 lien against Balk on Aug. 15 with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds. The IRS claimed she owed income taxes for 2000 and 2007.

Her side:

Balk said she has been fighting the bill for 10 years.

“I don’t owe them the money,” she said in a voicemail message.

After leaving the message, Balk sent a follow-up email.

“I received a letter from the IRS, they accepted my amended return, so I do not owe that money,” she wrote. “It’s finally settled.”

Her accountant later sent documentation of the amended tax return and said Monday the lien is in the process of being released.

“In theory, the lien is valid, but it is going to be released,” accountant Lester Caesar said.

Balk overpaid on recent tax filings, he said. The IRS is going to intercept the overpayment to satisfy the outstanding balance.

Anything left over will be refunded to Balk, he said.
