U.S. Rep. Gary Peters added to his already long list of endorsements this week when he announced he has gained the backing of 45 local and state officials, including former Gov. James Blanchard.
Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, is running for re-election to Congress in the newly reconfigured 14th District. He’s in a four-person Democratic primary on Aug. 7.
Among those in the latest group: Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner and Prosecutor Jessica Cooper; State Reps. Tim Greimel of Pontiac, Vicki Barnett of Farmington Hills and Lisa Brown of West Bloomfield Township, Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner, Hamtramck Mayor Dr. Karen Majewski, three Keego Harbor city councilmen, and members of the boards of education in Pontiac, Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield.
Previously, Peters announced endrosements from 20 unions and other local officials such as Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, 10 officials in Southfield (whose mayor, Brenda Lawrence, is running against Peters), and a raft of Detroit clergy.
Also running in the Democratic primary in the 14th is U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, D-Detroit, and former state Rep. Mary Waters.
Clarke’s campaign put out a slick Web video this week of the grand opening of his east side Detroit campaign office on East Warren.
In the video, he appears to take a swipe at Peters’ long list of endorsments. “All the endorsements?” he asks those at the event. “We need Congress to endorse us!”
