Sometimes you just need a change of scenery.
Even if it’s Florida in the summertime.
Family and friends scoffed at the mention of a weekend retreat to Florida in late July, but I am here to tell you it was a wise choice. Fort Lauderdale proved to be the perfect antidote to seasonal restlessness. All I needed for bliss was beach, sun and pool. Sure, I could have ventured to the magnificent beaches on Michigan’s west coast but I felt the need for more space between me and home and wasn’t looking to spend hours in a car.
What made this three-day trip to Fort Lauderdale work so well? 1) A direct flight from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport ” only two-plus hours and fares are much cheaper in the summer. 2) A 10-minute drive from the airport to the hotel. 3) A short walk or bike ride from the hotel to the beach. 4) Fewer tourists.
There’s plenty to see and do in Fort Lauderdale and a multitude of fine restaurants. But none of that mattered to me. I did little else besides loll at the beach and pool. Even the weather was better — not quite as super steamy as Michigan. The trip was all about convenience and relaxation. I found it.
