Delmon Young: Outfield or DH?

The Tigers have to tread lightly here. They don’t want Young counter-productively thinking he’s going to get a bunch of DH at-bats with Victor Martinez out.

But the truth of the matter is that Young is going to get exactly that: A bunch of DH at-bats.

Not enough to get him moping – but that will be the tricky balancing part of it.

So they’re saying the right things now about Young NOT being the DH.

“We see him as the left fielder,” Tigers’ president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said of Young on Tuesday at the Detroit Sports Broadcasters luncheon.

“We know he can swing the bat. We also know, when you do all the defensive work on it, he’s a below-average left fielder from a defensive perspective.

“But the DH will be whoever Jim (Leyland) wants as the DH on that particular day. It could be Delmon sometimes. It could be Brennan Boesch. It could be Miguel (Cabrera). It could be Prince (Fielder).

“It could be Alex Avila on the days he doesn’t catch. It could be Jhonny Peralta. But right now, I’d say Delmon is our left fielder.”

It’ll be a committee, that’s for sure.

But when all is said and done, I think Young will have the most DH at-bats of any Tigers’ hitter this season.
