Justin Verlander’s streak of 10 consecutive Red Sox hitters retired ended with one out here in the fifth, when Ryan Sweeney singled softly to center field.
The next ball put in play wasn’t hit softly, and threatened to end the scoreless tie.
Ex-Tiger Cody Ross drove a Verlander pitch deep to right field, but Brennan Boesch hauled it in at the warning track. Jarrod Saltalmacchia ended the inning with a weak grounder to second base, where Ramon Santiago handled it and threw to Prince Fielder, who scrambled back to cover the base.
Four-and-a-half innings in the book and it’s not even 2:30 yet.
That’s what happens in pitching duels like this. Like the old days. Gotta love it.
Due up in the bottom of the fifth for the Tigers: Raburn, Peralta, Avila.
