New Orleans has Mardi Gras, Gilroy, Calif., has its famous Garlic Festival and Memphis has Memphis In May barbecue gala, but no Opening Days are celebrated like the one here in Detroit.
The scene outside of Comerica Park at noon Thursday was joyous pandemonium. Thousands of fans jammed the streets as rock bands, rock radio stations and personal boom boxes blasted music off the walls of the stadium.
Tailgaters were busy beering and barbecuing, and crowds of kids had their photos taken between the paws of the giant crouching tiger directly outside the stadium.
To the amusement of many in the crowd, Detroit police ticketed an imposing Hummer 2 parked rather arrogantly parked directly in front of the stadium.
Two mounted Detroit police officers smiled, waved and posed for photos while astride their mounts. Black leather jackets, weapons and sitting in the saddle on 1,000 pounds of horse flesh. If that image doesn’t make a kid want to become a police officer, then nothing will.
No party like Opening Day in Detroit
